A helmet destined for a casual day at the local crag has different demands than one destined for a month-long expedition to a 7,000-meter peak. I established our "Expedition-Grade" QC protocol at SPIRIT to ensure that every mountaineering helmet we produce is ready for the latter. This protocol adds an extra layer of scrutiny on top of our already rigorous quality control. It includes subjecting random samples to a cold-soak test, where we freeze the helmet to -30°C before putting it through the impact testing machine to verify the performance of the materials in extreme cold. We conduct additional cycle testing on all mechanical parts, like adjustment dials and buckles, to simulate the wear and tear of a long trip. Every single helmet that comes off the line undergoes an enhanced visual inspection to ensure there are absolutely no cosmetic flaws that could become a structural issue later. This heightened QC protocol is our assurance to our partners that a SPIRIT-made mountaineering helmet is truly ready for anything.
